A special agony slices through him nightly, hearing the device he designed alert Shilo to medicate, tying her to him indefinitely, ruining her from the inside. Ruining her in a different way than he is. He sees Marni in her eyes, her mouth, and it’s a sin for a sixteen-year-old to seem so sensual, locked inside. Growing too fast. He vows she’ll never see what he sees, and so he keeps her in. He doesn’t know another way to keep her from the blood and the pain and the sickness and the spiking feeling of loss and the spiking feeling of need.
He knows it’s not enough, that he’s not enough, but he’ll still lie to her nightly, dripping tasteless poison into her drink and pressing kisses to her forehead. He whispers promises into her ear, calls her Marni, by mistake. He presses into her, closing his eyes, so she won’t see the blood and the pain and the sickness and the loss and the need. When he leaves, the plastic crinkles, and it helps him pretend he’s saving her, tucking his girl away.
Marni, forgive me, please forgive me.
